SketchLoose's
Many questions I get asked often have simple and accessible answers, so do have a read through below.
Sketch Loose offers a unique approach to learning, replicating the exact way that I learned to sketch and paint - which is also how I still love to learn, and teach.
Instead of a series of dull exercises, we embark straight away on sketching.
Each workshop has background material on it's key concept, and then we set out on one or more sketching challenges that incorporate this concept - meaning not only are we learning and developing, we're also creating great art along the way.
For me, this method of learning keeps my motivation the highest, and I have found to be by far the most effective way of developing my sketching.
Each course consists of five or more main workshops, each of which is based around a specific theme.
Each course has significant written material that compliments the videos, both reiterating key points but also expanding beyond them and giving you more depth and breadth of information.
And a key part of the courses is feedback in a really engaged and interactive community of like minded sketchers.
The simple answer is yes.
And there are even courses specifically built with beginners in mind.
There are sketchers at all parts of their journey on this course, and so far the feedback from beginners through to expert sketchers has been very positive.
The focus of these courses is on improving skills, and creating art. Reflecting on our current style and seeing where we want it to go.
As such, there is something for us all to learn - no matter where we are.
I give feedback on all posts in the course comments sections - this means that you, as a beginner, have the opportunity to ask all the questions you have ever wanted. And get a personalised touch to the start of your art journey.
The most beginner-friendly courses are Ink and Watercolour Sketching for Beginners and The Sketch Loose Method for Landscapes. The Sketch Loose Method for Urban Scenes is more challenging, but great for confident beginners ready to take the next step and challenge themselves. But will certainly still provide advanced artists a challenge if they are looking to loosen up their style.
Every course includes personalised feedback to support each artist’s individual journey.
There are no time limits on access for my courses, and you can repeat and re-watch as often as you like.
All my course prices are in GBP (£), as I’m a small UK-based business (just me!). Prices vary depending on the course, and if you're purchasing from abroad, the final cost in your currency will depend on the exchange rate at the time of purchase—just like using your card abroad. I suggest checking either google or with your bank to be sure of the current rate.
Yes! The course videos are pre-recorded. You also receive a comprehensive written material and downloadable references and examples, and you have lifetime access to go through them at your own pace.
However, there is a significant live component as you also have feedback from me on everything that you post.
These courses are interactive because I personally answer all questions and queries and provide feedback on anything you post in the course (as long as it’s related to the course material). This is something that gets an enormously positive response from sketchers taking part in the course, so it's 100% here to stay.
Absolutely! They are hosted on https://www.urbansketch.co.uk - included are short workshops, day long workshops and weekend retreats.
No worries, I'm here to help. There are some simple steps below and also a helpful post you can check out here: https://www.sketchloose.co.uk/blog/dashboard
Follow these simple steps:

2) Check your dashboard once you have logged in. You can find it by clicking your initials in the top right corner of the website.
3) If you can't log in, follow the reset password instructions.
4) If you can't find a course. Check you registered with the correct email address. You should have received a welcome email, if it isn't in your inbox or spam then send me an email to check.
5) Double check that your payment went through on your card/paypal.
If all else fails take a screenshot of where you have got to and send me an email.
There is a free course that offers a fun experience that means you can try out the platform before you buy any courses.
The free courses are much shorter and more simple that the paid courses, of course. But will give you a taster of what you're in for.
I'm afraid this isn't possible at present.
For the supplies I work with just check out the supplies tab at the top of the website.
You can also find supplies links and videos in all of my courses that are specific to that course.
Surface - student grade watercolour paper, A5 or A4 (UK) or Half-Letter or Letter (USA) in size. I prefer cold pressed paper. This paper might be in loose sheets, or in a sketchbook - either is fine
Sketching implement - a waterproof fineliner, or a sketching fountain pen (a cheap option is a 'Platinum Preppy'). Look for the words 'permanent' or 'waterproof' on the fineliner.
Ink (if using a fountain pen) - A waterproof ink, such as platinum carbon X ink.
Important note here - not all waterproof inks are fountain pen safe. I have written a blog here about the inks I use - CLICK HERE.
Watercolour paints - a student grade starter set is an affordable option and plenty to get started.
Watercolour brush - as a minimum, I would suggest student grade size 6 and 12 round brushes. And a half inch flat. These sizes are approximate and just a guideline.
Absolutely, if you are in any of my courses feedback is an integral part. Follow this link to make sure you're getting the feedback you want and know how to post your art - https://www.sketchloose.co.uk/blog/feedback
If you are not part of my paid courses or are taking my free course then I’m so happy you’ve joined me, and I love having people take part in my free courses.
However, I have to be mindful of my time and focus on supporting those in my paid courses, so I’m not able to offer individual feedback here or via my email inbox.
That said, I truly appreciate you being part of my community, and I hope the course helps you develop your sketching.
This post and video will help - https://www.sketchloose.co.uk/blog/feedback
There are also explainers at the top of every course (check the introductory section) which will help.
Once you know how, you'll find it quick and simple.
Not a worry...
Here are some easy steps you can take: https://www.sketchloose.co.uk/blog/reducing-an-image-file-size-on-iphone-or-android
There are some really big differences here. In short, my SketchLoose courses are comprehensive and take months to produce. I log in daily and provide detailed feedback.
SkillShare classes are light touch, fun and with simple projects. Great if you want an online resource to play and learn gently.
I wrote a more lengthy explainer here with more info: https://www.sketchloose.co.uk/blog/sketchloosevsskillshare
