FAQ - 'My File Size is Too Big' to post

  • Toby Haseler

If you have your camera set to a very high quality (and why not, you deserve nice photos!) then some images might be too large to post on websites and forums, including SketchLoose.co.uk. On my website this happens if your photo is very large, over 4Mb in size.

However, there are very easy ways to solve this and reduce your file size quickly on you phone.

1. Crop & Reduce Resolution

If you just need a smaller file size without downloading anything, you can do this manually:

  1. Crop the image:

    • Open the Photos app.

    • Select the photo and tap Edit.

    • Tap the Crop tool and adjust the frame to remove unnecessary parts.

    • Tap Done to save the changes.

  2. Reduce the resolution by taking a screenshot:

    • Open the photo in full screen.

    • Take a screenshot (Press Power + Volume Up).

    • Go to Photos, open the screenshot, and crop the status bar if needed.

    • The screenshot is usually a smaller file size than the original image.

2. Use the Mail App or Gmail App (Quick & Simple)

  1. Open the Photos app.

  2. Select the photo you want to resize.

  3. Tap the Share button (bottom-left).

  4. Choose Mail.

  5. When prompted, select a smaller file size (Small, Medium, or Large).

  6. Send the email to yourself and download the resized photo.

3. Use the Shortcuts App (Automated Resize)

  1. Open the Shortcuts app (pre-installed on iPhones).

  2. Tap + (Create New Shortcut).

  3. Tap Add Action, search for Resize Image, and select it.

  4. Set the width/height (e.g., 50% or enter specific dimensions).

  5. Tap Add Action, search for Save to Photos, and select it.

  6. Save and run the shortcut to quickly resize images anytime

4. Use WhatsApp

  1. Send the image to yourself or a trusted contact via WhatsApp.

  2. After sending, tap and hold on the image, then tap Download (or use the three dots > "Save to Gallery").

  3. The saved image will be automatically compressed – much smaller than the original.
