I really thought this course was fantastic. Both incredibly fun and super functional. I have been able to relive the beautiful places I have been on various holidays and hikes. I think I really learned something about atmospheric perspective that I can actually apply. And I have dared to deviate from the photo quite a bit here and there. In short, I am very happy.

I said it before you are a fantastic teacher and an inspiring artist.

Sharing our progress

This is a space for your own reflection - so you can look back at your answers when you have finished and see just how far you have come.

I'll share with you my progress, and I'd love to hear from you what you'd like to achieve in this course.

What are your goals?

Simplifying Shapes and Textures

In loose ink and wash landscapes, simplifying shapes and textures is key to capturing the essence of a scene.

By reducing complex elements into basic shapes and suggesting textures with minimal detail, we can convey the character of the landscape while maintaining a sense of spontaneity and energy.

In this workshop we'll explore ink techniques that help us to do just this, as well as considering the idea of an artist's 'shorthand' and developing our sketching style.

Introducing Workshop One
Supplies - a 'talk-through'
Warm Up Doodles
Gestural Lines and Simple Scenes
A Field of Flowers - Keeping it Simple

Spontaneity vs Control

Getting that loose and spontaneous feel can feel so challenging, especially if we're not sure how to balance these more expressive techniques against a controlled and accurate process.

Our previous workshop focussed on ink techniques, and now we'll move on to watercolours.

We will explore how to achieve a mindful flow in our processes - considering different concepts in loose and expressive art, from gestural brush strokes to wet on wet colours, whilst also thinking about the necessity for controlling our more wild side and creating a balanced piece of art.

Introducing Workshop Two
Initial Considerations
Avoiding Overworked Colours
Water Control
Spontaneity and Control - Different Stages of a Painting
A Spontaneous Scene

Composition and the Focal Point

Composition is a tricky area, and getting it right can feel like it might make or break your art.

We might often learn that there are a series of 'rules' to creating a correct composition, but in this workshop we will be going beyond rules and applying a flexible set of ideas that helps us to craft a pleasing and appealing composition, as well as build up a focal point that is inherently interesting.

Introducing Workshop Three
Flexible Rules of Composition and Focal Points
Compositional Studies
Tackling a Challenging Composition

Building Depth and Atmospheric Perspective

In this workshop we will be examining atmospheric perspective and how a range of techniques in ink work and watercolour painting can produce a real sense of depth through your image.

Atmospheric perspective isn't as rigid or rule-based as linear perspective. Having an awareness of different ways that weight of line, hatching, colour saturation, value or temperature can impact your art becomes invaluable in creating art with depth.

Introducing Workshop Four
Perspective, but not as you know it
Sketching with Depth

Negative Space

In this section we will explore the sometimes elusive and challenging area of 'negative space'.

Negative space is the empty space around and between the subject(s) of an image. And leaving negative space is an invaluable technique to immediately simplify a scene, create visual interest and contrast, and enhance the effectiveness of the composition.

In this workshop we'll be exploring how to make decisions about where to leave negative space.

Introducing Workshop Five
Negative Space - Four Ways
A Portrait Landscape
