Watercolours

I have two different palettes of professional grade watercolours on the go at any one time.

Handcrafted watercolours from Cornwall

These colours are handcrafted by Ian from Cornwall, his company is 'JustGoSketching'. He uses high quality pigments from 'L Cornelissen & Son' in London. And his recipes lead to wonderful movement. I almost exclusively use Ian's colours now when sketching en plein air and I'm over the moon to support a fellow small business from the UK too.

My favourite palette consists of: Cobalt Turquoise, Cobalt Blue, Prussian Blue, Vermillion, Ultramarine Pink, Lemon Yellow, Chromium Oxide, Burnt Sienna, Mars Yellow, Vandyke Brown, Ultramarine Violet, Potter's Pink

(On orders over £35)

Daniel Smith watercolours

These are famously bright and exciting pigments. Ideal for my more expressive style.

My current palette consists of: Lavendar, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue Chromium, Organic Vermillion, Pyrrol Scarlet, Rhodonite Genuine, Hansa Yellow Medium, Indian Red, Lunar Eart, Quinacridone Sienna, Cobalt Green, Jadeite Green, Sugilite Genuine and Sodalite Genuine (this is slightly different from the picture to the right).

Windsor Newton Cotman

For a budget friendly but still good quality option I recommend Windsor Newton's Cotman range. Which comes in very affordable standard sets like this with excellent and long lasting palettes.

The included brush is not worth using! So I recommend picking up something extra (see below).

Empty palettes

I use these simple empty palettes for most of my palettes. They fit standard sizes of pans/half pans and I squeeze my tube colours out into those.

Pencils, mixed media and brushes

Jackson's Studio Synthetic Brushes

This range of synthetic brushes are excellent quality and useful for producing a variety of watercolour techniques. Vegan friendly.

My favourite brushes are their...

  • 1 inch flat

  • Size 24 round

  • Size 10 round

Da Vinci Casaneo Travel Brushes

Part of the excellent Casaneo range, these travel brushes for watercolour feature synthetic Kazan squirrel offering great colour holding capacity and precision.

Derwent Waterbrushes

These waterbrushes are by far the best that I have found! Big bristles and an even bigger water reservoir. Unlike most waterbrushes, these are a pleasure to paint with.

Caran d'Ache : Museum Aquarelles Pencils

Watercolour pencils with a high concentration of extra fine pigments and excellent water-solubility.

Neocolour ii

Caran D'Ache NEOCOLOR II Artists' Watercolour Crayons are among the widest range of wax-based water-soluble pastels on the market.
