Why I’m Retiring Two of My Most Popular Courses – And What’s Coming Next
- Toby Haseler
If you've taken Developing Line Work or Advancing Colours, first of all—thank you. These courses have helped so many sketchers explore more complex ideas and grow their confidence. They’ll always hold a special place in my heart. But after two years, it’s time for something new. So I wanted to explain why these two courses are coming off sale, what’s replacing them, and what’s next.
First, a reassurance:
If you already own Developing Line Work or Advancing Colours, nothing is changing for you. You’ll still have full lifetime access, and I’ll continue supporting those courses with feedback and replies. This change only affects new students going forward.
The new course is also totally 100% brand new content - whilst it covers some subjects which are the same (like perspective) it does it in a totally new way. And (I think) in a far more achievable and enjoyable way too. I have been able to pull on everything I've learnt to make the structure of the course clearer, and the journey from first workshop to last much more purposeful and connected.
One example of how my approach has changed is in how I teach colour. In the old course, we focused on colour schemes as a standalone topic—exploring them in a dedicated workshop. In the new course, colour is treated more holistically. We look at intentional colour use, and how the properties of colours and pigments effect our sketching: not just what colours work together, but why certain choices matter in a sketch, how simplicity can create clarity, and how mood, light, and focus come into play. Colour schemes are still part of the conversation, but now they’re woven throughout the entire course, showing up in context where they really count as well as having dedicated space.
Why I’m retiring them:
Over the past few years, my own sketching style and teaching approach have evolved. The new course that’s coming instead Developing Line Work and Advancing Colours isn’t just a tidy update, it’s a completely fresh experience.
Here’s why I made the switch:
Better quality, all around
My filming setup, editing process, sound quality—everything has improved massively since I made those older courses. I want all my courses to reflect the best I can offer today.A fresh style, with new insights
My style has changed. Not completely, but enough that I now think differently about things like composition, colour, and line. This new course reflects those developments in full.A natural next step from the Beginner’s Course
With the Beginner’s Course doing so well, I wanted to offer something more challenging—a course you can grow into. This is that course. It picks up where the beginner journey leaves off, it's more challenging than the courses it replaces. But I think with the improvements in my teaching style, people will find themselves growing so much quicker too.A real focus on urban sketching
My older courses were about technique, but didn’t lean into the magic of sketching on location. This new course is all about capturing the places around you—messy, lively, unpredictable. It’s urban sketching through and through.Sustainability and feedback
Supporting students properly is something I care deeply about. That means replying to comments, giving feedback, and staying engaged. With too many “live” courses open for new students, I simply can’t keep up. Removing the older ones helps me do better by you.
What’s the new course like?
It’s bigger than anything I’ve done before. It includes more content than the two older courses combined, with a structure that really builds from lesson to lesson. There’s a clear pathway, space to experiment, and lots of examples of my own sketching process. You can see below how the course is laid out.
It’s also been tested by real students—and the feedback has been amazing. People have called it “challenging in the best way,” and more than one tester has said it’s the best course I’ve ever made. I’m incredibly proud of it, and very excited for you to try it.
What about the price?
It will cost more than each of the old courses individually, but less than buying both together. And honestly—it offers a lot more. Better structure, better quality, better support, and more ways to push yourself creatively.
What’s next?
After this launch, I’ll be working on some shorter courses—think of them as sketching “add-on workshops.” These will dive into specific topics like watercolour, ink, or line work. Smaller, focused, and great for topping up your skills.
If you’re an existing student—thank you for being part of this. And if you’re thinking about joining in, I can’t wait to show you what’s next.
